Module 1: What Does It Mean to Be An Authentic Ally?

In today's diverse and evolving workplaces, being an ally goes beyond merely making friends or attending professional development sessions on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). This module delves into the deeper understanding of what it truly means to be an authentic ally, contrasting it with superficial allyship. Authentic allyship is characterized by genuine commitment and understanding through specific postures and behaviors.

In this Module, learners will explore the essence of authentic allyship. The module begins by defining authentic allyship and contrasting it with inauthentic allyship. Participants will learn about the characteristics of an authentic ally, such as listening with intent, navigating conversations, decentering oneself, practicing cultural humility, and speaking up appropriately. Through a combination of definitions, examples, and action steps, learners will develop strategies to enhance their ally-building skills. By understanding these principles, participants will be better equipped to foster a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse workplace.

I Will Learn How To:

  • Define authentic allyship and understand its importance in the workplace.
  • Identify and adopt effective strategies for being an authentic ally.
  • Recognize the characteristics of inauthentic allyship and how to avoid them.
  • Understand the impact of privilege and how to navigate conversations with humility and respect.
  • Commit to continuous learning and meaningful actions to support those who face oppression or discrimination.
